Flower Drum Song is a good comedy/musical written by Rogers and Hammerstein. I've seen it a few times. It's basically a story about Chinese Americans in SF back in the 1950s. I liked it a lot because it shows the changes that chinese culture went through over the 20th century. Some side notes: one Chinese aunt (Madame Auntie Liang) is actually played by an African American actress (Juanita Hall). Nancy Kwan, who plays Linda Low, is a total babe!

betelnut beauty, a taiwan film looks pretty interesting

i'm always all over this every year. but i guess this year's cheapy poster instead of a catalog hasn't inticed me too much to dig too deeply into the festival schedule. i'll probably see a few shows and try to get tix for ppl if they want. anyone peep it out on the schedule yet? the short programs are usually pretty good. the popular showings usually get sold out very quickly. i usually end up checking out one or two short programs, interesting asian-am films done in english, and one chinese one. i also tend to gravitate towards the ones lighter in nature.

has anyone seen the flower drum song? i've recently heard really good things about this oldie flick. maybe worth renting.

the festival is from march 7 - march 14. festival website. check out the website, since it has a bunch of stills from the showings.

after a quickie glance at the schedule, i'll probably think about drink my pocari sweat (fri nite), betelnut beauty (sat nite/wed nite), 24 hour fitless(sat nite), lolo's child (mon nite), e-dreams (sun nite...it's about the rise and fall of kozmo.com).

it's always fun to go with a bunch of lumps. lemme know if you're thinking about it. always good fun and fellowship waiting in line together and chilling afterwards. checking out the festival is also a great chance to sometimes introduce some of my non-christian friends to you people. i know that it's easier for them to come to lumps after they've met a few people they can talk to.

if you read the article, it mentions the origins of the chinese new year parade. my grandfather's older brother (h.k. wong....if you're familiar with chinese-american history) was one of those guys who started the parade and festivities here in sf back then. (and he also sold msg.) they did it to boost the chinatown community and attract attention to it. very cool stuff. he was a journalist and very involved in the community back then.
